Collected Poems 2004-2009

Collected Poems is about focusing in on complex and intricate detailed fragments of nature. There are three parts to the whole installation –one a collection of feathers, two a collection of insect wings and the third a collection of decaying Aspen leaves. The method of isolating each object refers to the scientific gaze -a gaze that isolates and magnifies parts of a whole removed from its original context. These objects -feathers, wings and leaves- invite the viewer to contemplate the complexity of nature. Each item was imaged on a scanner and printed on untreated Washi paper, and then they were attached to the wall using specimen pins. The photographs invite the viewer to marvel at the beauty of these natural structures.

Feral Apples

Feral Apples is a series of feral apples showing their wear and tear of existence in the wild. These apples are the result of seeds finding ideal conditions to develop into apple trees.  Apple trees grown from seed do not always develop into the variety from which they were grown. To always get the same variety you need to splice (graf) a branch of the variety onto a host tree. These feral apples range from cherry size to very large. They show the hardiness of their existence through the imperfect shapes and surface blemishes. The grid display makes a reference to the commercial world of apples; a place where uniformity, selection of size, flavour, colour and pest resistance take precedence. Many of these feral varieties were abandoned because of their sharp flavours and hardness of their flesh. The apples reveal a wondrous complexity, variability, and tenacity of the natural world.
